Contemporary Literary Ideas and Practices in the United States of America and United Kingdom
Conference Background and Scope
The present is a confounded and confounding era in literary studies with key terms and concepts remaining increasingly vexed and unresolved. What constitutes a nation and national identity? What is the nature and impact of the modern, the contemporary, and the relationship between them? What is, and what can be, the sociopolitical role of literature and aesthetic ideas and communication? To address these questions, the Journal of Foreign Languages and Cultures is sponsoring an international conference on contemporary literary ideas and practices in the United States of America and United Kingdom hoping to engender dialogue and further understanding of topics of pressing concern to many scholars around the globe. This conference is co-hosted by the Foreign Studies College and the British and American Poetry Research Center of Hunan Normal University. Affiliates of the conference through participant involvement include the University of Chicago and California State University, Los Angeles.
Suggested topics for papers and panels. Submissions in other areas are welcome.

Submission Guidelines
Individual Paper Proposals: Please send a 300-word abstract including the title of the paper, your name, affiliation, mailing address, phone and fax number, and email address.
Panel Proposals: In addition to providing detailed contact information for each panel member, please send an abstract of no more than 600 words summarizing the panel and describing each paper.
Round Table Proposals: In addition to providing detailed contact information for each participant, please send a title and an abstract of no more than 300 words for the proposed roundtable discussion topic.
Submission Deadline: Please email your proposals to CLIconference @163.com no later than May 1st, 2019. Registration fee is 130 US dollars (half for students) for international delegates. The fee covers the conference packet, refreshments, and meals during the conference; it does not cover travel, accommodations, or other fees not specified. The registration fee may be paid on-site.

Introduction to
Hunan Normal University
Hunan Normal University, founded in 1938, is a large comprehensive university spread over five campuses offering undergraduate through doctoral degrees from 24 colleges. It is ranked as one of China’s 100 key universities in the 21st century as a “Project 211” institution with Double First-Class Status, and Key National Discipline designation from the national Ministry of Education in many fields, including English Language and Literature. The university is easily accessible by national and international modes of transit, and conference housing is at a luxury hotel on the campus. The university boasts a dramatic natural setting at the foot of Yuelu Mountain in the modern metropolis of Changsha, the capital city of Hunan Province, which holds great historical and cultural interest and natural beauty. The university has academic partnerships with almost 200 universities in 41 countries.
